Supreme Court Judge Justice M.R. Shah and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta felicitated

Speaking at a functionat the Gujarat High Court here to felicitate appointment of Justice M.R. Shah as a Supreme Court Judge and Mr. Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General of India, Mr. Rupani said that appointment of both the Gujaratis would provide a new direction to India passing through that transitional phase.
           
Mr. Rupani said that when the right person gets the right opportunity the nation gets the right leadership. He congratulated both the dignitaries on behalf of 6.50-crore Gujaratis and said that their appointments would prove significant.

He recalled how Gujarat has been providing the leadership to the nation from the time of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel for freedom, and later against corruption during NavnirmanAndolan (1974). The way Gujarat took leadership in social and spiritual fields, he said, it would now provide guidance and direction in the field of judiciary as well.

The Chief Minister recounted how Gujarat’s courts had taken several pro-people fast-track steps to provide justice to the people during their difficulties in the past, notably the LokAdalats to reduce the pendency of cases.

Reciprocating to the felicitation, Mr. Justice M.R. Shah recounted his reminiscence in Gujarat and appealed to young lawyers to maintain decorum and dignity of the courts and commitments towards the judiciary.

Mr. Tushar Mehta expressed his gratitude towards the lessons he learnt in Gujarat. He said that Gujarat respects its sons, literally carry them on their shoulder to ensure they rise high.

The Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Mr. Justice Anant S. Dave wished both Supreme Court Justice M.R. Shah and Solicitor General Tushar Dave would set new benchmarks.

Gujarat’s Law Minister BhupendraChudasma said that a successful lawyer is one who can convince the court and not confuse. He said the State’s budgetary allocation for the Law and Legal Department has been increased manifold. It is also building district courts that look like high court. He said the State is conscious about modernization of the judiciary.

Advocate General Kamal Trivedi said that it is a matter of pride to have Gujaratis as Supreme Court Judge and Solicitor General, to take Gujarat’s voice to Delhi.

Noted lawyer and poet BakulJoshipurasaid that Justice M.R. Shah has the characteristics of an impartial, restrained and seasoned judge, and Mr. Tushar Mehta has the oratorical powers of a lawyer.

Bar Council of Gujarat Chairman Dipenbhai Dave said that the Council would start series of tutorial lectures for lawyers through YouTube from January 1, 2019.

Those present on the occasion included sitting and retired High Court Judges, Mr. YatinOza, Government Pleader Manisha Lavkumar, Members of the Bar Council, lawyers and a large number of people associated with the judiciary.

The Government of Gujarat is organising the Vibrant Gujarat GlobalTrade Show 2019 (VGGTS 2019), from 18-22 January 2019, at the ExhibitionGround, near Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar. With an area of nearly 2,00,000sq. mt, VGGTS 2019 will have the largest exhibition area housing 18 domes, showcasing nearly 25 sectors, over 2000 stalls and as many companies. The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit was conceptualized in 2003 by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi, to reinforce the position of Gujarat as a preferred investment destination within India.
From a modest exhibition area of 3000 sq. mtr comprising 36 stalls in Vibrant Gujarat 2003 to an area of more than 1,25,000 sq. meters comprising over 1000 stalls in Vibrant Gujarat2017, the Trade Show over the years has become a significant platform for companies to exhibit their products, services and showcase their success stories to delegates from across the globe.

National cancer Institute Haryana
National Cancer institute has been opened at Jhajjar in Haryana. The institute has been established under a project of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Gujarat adjudged “Best Performer in States’ Start-up Ranking 2018
Gujarat has added one more feather to its cap under the leadership of the dynamic Chief Minister Mr. Vijay Rupani. Gujarat has earned the “BEST PERFORMER” in States Start-up Ranking  with a score of 100 percentile in the newly launched State Start-up Rankings 2018 assessment held by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). DIPP conducted the study to assess States and Union Territories on key areas of interventions that are fundamental to a healthy Start-up ecosystem. The aim of the rankings is to help bring notice to the progress that various States have made for promoting Start-ups, and at the same time foster a spirit of competition between the States.
Gujarat’s reputation as a fast growing hub for technology & services-based Start-ups reflects in the new rankings that were published today. The Government of Gujarat has taken proactive steps in key areas such as incubation support, seed funding support, simplified regulations, and easing public procurement. Gujarat also scored exceedingly well on the awareness and outreach parameters, an example of which is the Vibrant Gujarat Start-Up and Technology Summit organized earlier this year. The Government currently supports 196 start-ups and provided incentives in form of sustenance allowance, product development assistance and marketing assistance. The Government of Gujarat has also recognised 34 nodal institutes for supporting start-ups. Apart from offering assistance, the Government of Gujarat also gives preference to Start-ups in public procurement.
Gujarat has been particularly recognized for seed funding support, policy formulation and implementation, incubation hubs, outreach events of national and international level, venture funding, public procurement etc.
PM to visit Statue of Unity on Dec-21
Prime Minister Mr. Narendrabhai Modi and other dignitaries will pay a visit to the Statue of Unity at Kevadia on the morning of December 21 (Friday).
On that day, the general public has been requested to visit the venue only after 11:00 a.m. and the evening shows of the Mapping and Light & Sound Show will also remain be closed for the day.
Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit to position Gujarat a hub for ‘Medical Tourism’ and Pharmaceutical Research & Development
Under the aegis of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat is organising a special seminar on Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals on the 19th on January
afternoon at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Titled ‘Shaping a New Paradigm in Medical & Pharma Services’, the seminar aims to take stock of the present industry scenario; explore opportunities and discuss navigation through the inevitable paradigm shift that is taking place in the healthcare sector. The aim is to arrive at actionable policy interventions that medical and pharmaceutical service providers can take for greater social impact. The healthcare sector is going through functional and structural changes and there is scope of further improvement in existing medical services through innovation and technology.
The seminar will also aim to position Gujarat as a hub for ‘Medical Tourism, given the availability of excellent medical infrastructure and highly skilled doctors that are at par with Western Countries providing world-class medical care at much lower cost. Gujarat is also a leader in the pharmaceutical sector and currently holds more than a third of the national share in pharmaceutical production over the last two decades. Gujarat based companies are currently in the process of scaling up their Research & Development operations to tap the huge potential of therapeutic categories and grabbing the opportunities to lead as a global player.As the 19th of January will also be the ‘Africa Day’ at Vibrant Gujarat 2019,
the Health & FW Department will be organizing several round table
meetings and field visits for delegates from Africa to hospitals and
pharmaceutical manufacturing units. Apart from that, delegates from
abroad and India will engage in B2B and B2G meetings with their
counterparts from the healthcare industry during Vibrant Gujarat Summit
2019.

Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat is also
coordinating special pavilion at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show.

Annual conference of State DGPs and IGs to begin from today in Gujarat

A three-day All-India annual conference of the state Directors General and Inspectors General of Police will begin from today near the Statue of Unity located in Narmada district of Gujarat in the presence of Home Minister Rajnath Singh.According to official sources in Ahmedabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will be on a two-day visit to the State from tomorrow will attend the event.A Union Home Ministry official had earlier said that militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, cross-border terrorism and attempts to radicalise youth will top the agenda of the annual conference.

Surrogacy Bill passed in Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha has passed the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016 which is aimed at prohibiting commercial surrogacy and unethical practices relating to it. The Bill has provisions to constitute National Surrogacy Board, State Surrogacy Boards and appointment of appropriate authorities for regulation of surrogacy.

It permits surrogacy only for couples who cannot conceive a child. The intending couple must be Indian citizens and married for at least five years with at least one of them being infertile. The surrogate mother has to be a close relative who has been married and has a child of her own.Introducing the Bill, Health Minister J P Nadda said, the bill is aimed at stopping the exploitation of Indian women. NCP member Supriya Shule favoured the Bill to permit single parents also to have children through surrogacy.


US starts withdrawing troops from Syria

United States has started to withdraw its troops from Syria. President Donald Trump in a tweet said they have defeated Islamic State group in Syria.Soon after his tweet, the White House announced that the US troops have started returning from Syria. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that five years ago, IS was a very powerful and dangerous force in the Middle East, and now the US has defeated its territorial caliphate.

However, she said these victories over IS in Syria do not signal the end of the Global Coalition or its campaign.The Pentagon declined to give any comment immediately. Several US lawmakers warned the Trump Administration that this was a grave error. Senator Jeanne Shaheen said the President’s tweet is dangerous, premature and wholly inconsistent with the facts on the ground in Syria and the military’s advice.

US Federal Reserve raises  interest rate for 4th time this year


US Federal Reserve has raised its key interest rate for the fourth time this year to reflect the US economy’s continued strength but signalled that it expects to slow its rate hikes next year.The quarter-point increase, to a range of 2.25 per cent to 2.5 per cent on Wednesday, lifted the Fed’s benchmark rate to its highest point since 2008. It will mean higher borrowing costs for many consumers and businesses.

US central bank’s move came despite President Donald Trump’s attacks in recent weeks on its rate hikes. He had complained that the moves are threatening the economy.At a news conference after the Fed’s announcement, Chairman Jerome Powell said Trump’s tweets and statements would have no bearing on the central bank’s policymaking.


Lok Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018
Lok Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018. The Bill seeks to replace the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The Bill enforces consumer rights and provides a mechanism for redressal of complaints regarding deficiencies in goods and services. It seeks to establish Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions at the district, State and National levels. The district Commissions are authorised to look into complaints involving claims worth one crore rupees, which was 20 lakh rupees earlier. The State Commissions’ limit is to be increased from one crore rupees to 15 crore rupees. Complaints over and above that limit would be handled by the National Commission. The Bill also seeks to impose stringent punishment for food adulterations. 

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan moved the Bill for further consideration in the post-lunch session. He said, the prevailing act is thirty-two years old, which does not reflect the conditions in current consumer market.The Bill was supported by all the eleven members who participated in the discussion, though Congress members continued to raise slogans seeking a JPC probe on the Rafale deal.
